A dream that became 'Legend' -- Twenty Years of the Contemporary Legend Theatre' By Andrew C.C. Huang Taiwan News, Contributing Writer 2006-10-14 It all started with a dream. Twenty years ago, a group of stage actors had an idea to merge eastern and western styles. As they planned their first production, little did they know that the dream will gradually evolve into the bona fide success it is today. The internationally acclaimed Contemporary Legend Theatre, founded in 1986 by Wu Hsing-kuo with his wife Lin Hsiu-wei, is celebrating its 20th anniversary with three of its classic shows - "The Kingdom of Desires," "King Lear" and "The Tempest" - at the Metropolitan Hall. As Wu, the artistic director of the troupe, recounts, "We were just very young actors back then with some dreams. We wanted to try something new out." Wu studied traditional Peking Opera for eight years at Fu-Hsing Chinese Opear School and then joined the famed Cloud Ga...

Tim Yip offers visual feast in designs for 'The Banquet' By Andrew C.C. Huang Taiwan News, Contributing Writer Page 1 2006-09-01 02:30 AM To emphasize the innocence of Zhou Xun's character Qing Nu, Tim Yip designed simple dresses composed of block colors without too many ornaments, such as this white top dress wrapped by a long burgundy skirt. Tim Yip Productions Tim Yip says his creations for "The Banquet" has a "Tang dynasty meets ancient Europe" feel. For most moviegoers, the name Tim Yip is associated with the ravishingly beautiful and elaborately designed costumes of the landmark epic "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." Yip received double nominations at the Oscars for both costume design and art direction and won in the costume category, forever linking his name to the grandeur of the dynastic and classical China in the audience's minds. However, there's more than one trick up Yip's sleeves. Since "Crouching Tig...

Master of His Generation -- China master Zhang Yimou discusses his latest movie “House of Flying Daggers” and the crafts of filmmaking -- By Andrew Huang (This article originally appeared in Taiwan News on December 15, 2004) When I saw Zhang Yimou, he was sitting in a beech chair situated right next to the swimming pool of the Martinez Hotel in Cannes. The brilliant sunlight of the summer French Riviera was brilliant and all-penetrating. The cascade of light poured onto the swimming pool surface and bounced back onto the poolside. In the middle of his long press junket, director Zhang was sitting in his chair, his entire body enveloped by the celestial brilliance of sunglow. The effect is what you would call a cinematic moment --- a cinematic master sitting right in front of you literally radiating light. Zhang is wearing his trademark working-class style outfit – blue shirt over grey T-shirt with olive pants. It seems that despite his decade plus world-class fame, Zhang remains clos...

Jet Li is fearless in his own right 2006-02-03 / Taiwan News, Contributing Writer / By Andrew C.C. Huang Anxiety and doubt cast shadows during the pre-production promotion for "Fearless." Jet Li, the kungfu superstar who has moved on to a Hollywood career, has finally returned to Asia to make a film he claims will be his "last kungfu movie." Will it turn out to be a publicity stunt of biblical proportions or a real kungfu classic? Li has claimed that there are few martial arts movies these days that truly convey the spirit of the real kungfu or "wushu." Hence the motive to make this movie as the epitome and "the pinnacle of Jet Li's kungfu movie career." Can any movie live up to this great expectation? Well, the verdict is out -"Fearless" surpasses expectations. "I started the idea of wanting to make this movie two years ago. I discussed it with Bill Kong (the producer of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon") and was fort...

"Midsummer Night’s Fable" Poem by Andrew C.C. Huang I have a midsummer night’s fable to tell you It started with a dream A fable is a tale in which we human beings project Our utmost desires and fantasies into At a midsummer’s night such as this one The vaulted sky is sprinkled with sparkling starry eyes The smoldering heat propels the body to move While the insouciant breezes carry the mind’s imagination forward We have tumbled and fallen We have stumbled and risen again Now we know the secret of life is to Tumble through these unquenched desires and unchained emotions With remorseless abandon Like this midsummer’s night When we carry our children to this midnight’s garden of desires and fantasies The rising temperature of passion and the sobering coolness of will Might turn our children into full-fledged human beings who could be loved So this is my midsummer night’s fable A fable woven by the fabrics of human desires, disappointment, passion, hatred, and th...

"A Duet by Myself" Poem by Andrew C.C. Huang Tonight, I am lonesome and alone I keep thinking of you You who are far away and yet so close Tonight, I am alone in this dimly lit apartment I simply have to sing a duet by myself A love song duet is sung by two persons in love Since you are not here tonight, I have to raise my voice -- in danger of breaking my voice -- To imitate your soprano voice Then I have to maintain my lower tenor voice, to sing about my yearning for you However, my voice is not the only one that is portraying two roles tonight My hands become substitutes of your love My two hands, dexterous, handle the microphone by turns Singing a duet by myself I raise my rise hand to sing about my longing for you My left hand tells me that the body is the embodiment of love, As if possessed by your soul I hand over the microphone to my left hand My left hand urges me to sing of my unconditional love for you While my right hand caress my forlorn heart, as ...

"In the Mood for Love" Painting by Andrew C.C. Huang "I Forgot" Poem by Andrew C.C. Huang When our path cross again, so unexpectedly the other day, On that tattered street where everyone else bizarrely moved on with their lives, A torrent of tempest washed over the sky and a tremor swept across the earth within one glance of your eyes You asked me, why did I not stay? Why did I not choose to share life with you? I hesitated for a while before replying, “I forgot.” That hesitation lasted for an eternity In which an old world was reopened by a chance encounter And an old wound torn open by a question Once we had promised eternity to each other When you drowned in the lake of melancholia I had rescued you with the pledge of eternal love Once when the world seemed full of threatening tempest We bravely shut out the menacing forces To seek warmth in the sanctuary of our love Once we had scorned at those ordinary beings Who do not know what love is How lucky we felt, that...

"The Esthetic of Sadness" Painting and poem by Andrew C.C. Huang The Esthetic of Sadness Sad -- but not lonely The evening breeze and the remnants of dusak rouge would keep me company Even my downward eyelashes still have the elegance of butterflies My beloved has gone But I still learn to maintain my dignity Even if sad, I will continue to be beautiful 悲傷美學 悲傷 但不寂寞 有晚風與殘留紅霞為伴 低垂的眼睫毛也有蝴蝶的風采 愛的人走了 但要學著保有自尊 即使悲傷也要美麗 "The Esthetic of Sadness" final version Painting by Andrew C.C. "Heartbroken" Painting by Andrew C.C. Huang "You Are Right After All" Poem by Andrew C.C. Huang When I encountered your beloved one And smiling politely and chat to him I finally realized that you were right after all He is the one for you --- and I am not. How many sleepless nights I have spent wondering about your intention and calculation Teasing me with your sunflower smiles and alienating me with you tantrums I walked on the tight rope of suspense for six months for you Only to find out a story with no ending Now that fate has led our paths to cross again After I have almost forgotten about you And I found out in the most astonishing surprise That you have loved me after all You are right after all Should you have stayed with me, you would only have lived in unfulfillness He is the one for you – who will bring you happiness Should you have stayed with me, you would have strayed into a difficult path Too painful for what you are born for When I see your beloved ...

"Shanghai Flower" Painting by Andrew C.C. Huang "The Religion of beauty" Poem by Andrew C.C. Huang The religion of beauty is so all-powerful that we are all once its disciples beauty is deceiving -- in that it deceives the beholders into believing that beauty equates virtue no matter how many times you have fallen into the trap of this deadly but lovely deception but oh who can forget the soul-elevating electric wattage one feels when beauty's glimmer of a smile shines upon one's ordinary face beauty is rarely innocent for its owners are always aware of its power but they have slowly mastered the craft of radiating beauty whilst feigning innocence because the combination of beauty and innocence is the most powerful elixir that is capable of leaving everyone enchanted and inebriated sending them up the mountain and down into the sea for the sake of protecting this preciously innocent beauty beauty's traitors are rarely self-willed they often abandon this ...
